Overview

Updated: 21 September 2026 | Reviewed by: Top Travel Prague team

Prague’s Jewish Quarter, Josefov, brings together centuries of Jewish religious life, scholarship, architecture and memory within a compact part of the historic centre. On this private three-hour tour, a knowledgeable guide introduces the people and events behind the monuments rather than simply moving from one landmark to the next.

The route can include the Old-New Synagogue, the Old Jewish Cemetery, the Spanish Synagogue and other sites associated with the Jewish Museum in Prague, depending on opening conditions and your interests. The tour is private, so the pace and historical focus can be adapted to your group.

What you can see in Prague’s Jewish Quarter

Josefov lies between Prague’s Old Town and the Vltava River. Jewish settlement in Prague is documented from at least the 10th century, and the district later became the centre of Jewish communal life in the city. Much of the old ghetto fabric disappeared during the major urban renewal of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but several important religious and cultural monuments survived.

Old-New Synagogue

The Gothic Old-New Synagogue is the oldest active synagogue in Europe and remains a functioning place of worship. Its architecture, furnishings and association with Prague’s rabbinical traditions make it one of the most important stops in Josefov.

Old Jewish Cemetery

The Old Jewish Cemetery is one of Europe’s oldest surviving Jewish burial grounds. It was used from the 15th to the 18th century and contains more than 12,000 visible tombstones. A guide can help explain the symbols, Hebrew inscriptions and stories connected with prominent members of Prague’s Jewish community.

Spanish Synagogue

Built in 1868, the Spanish Synagogue is the newest synagogue of the former Jewish Town. Its richly decorated Moorish Revival interior gave the building its name. The synagogue was not built for a Spanish or Sephardic congregation; today it houses an exhibition focused on Jewish life in the Czech lands in the 19th and 20th centuries.

A note on a frequently repeated wartime story

The claim that Hitler deliberately preserved Prague’s Jewish Quarter to create a „museum of an extinct race“ is widely repeated, but the Jewish Museum in Prague states that surviving archival documents do not support it. In 1942, the Prague Jewish community initiated the Central Jewish Museum under Nazi occupation. Museum staff used the institution to preserve ritual objects, books and archival material from Jewish communities that were being destroyed. The history is more complex, and more important, than the popular myth.

Suggested private tour itinerary

Every tour can be customised. The sequence below is an example and may change according to museum opening hours, religious observances, temporary closures and the interests of your group.

1. Pick-up or meeting at your accommodation, depending on location and the agreed plan.
2. Introduction to the history of Prague’s Jewish community and the development of Josefov.
3. Jewish Museum in Prague sites, selected according to access and your interests.
4. Old-New Synagogue.
5. Old Jewish Cemetery.
6. Spanish Synagogue.
7. Burial Society Ceremonial Hall and Hevra Kadisha context, viewed from outside while the building remains closed for reconstruction.
8. Finish at your accommodation or another agreed location in the city centre, subject to the route and timing.

Practical information before your visit

The Jewish Museum in Prague is not one single museum building. Its visitor circuit connects several historic synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery within Josefov. Most of the route is naturally explored on foot, and the principal sites are close to one another.

Opening days: the Jewish Museum is closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays. The Old-New Synagogue is administered by the Prague Jewish Community and may close earlier on Fridays before Shabbat. Check the official Jewish Museum opening information when planning a date.

Admission: the current Top Travel Prague product listing specifies the private guide as included. It does not specify museum admission fees as an included service, so ticket arrangements should be confirmed when you send your request. The Jewish Museum’s main visitor ticket currently covers several of the key Josefov sites, including the Old-New Synagogue. Current admission information is available from the Jewish Museum in Prague.

Accessibility: several sites are historic buildings with steps, thresholds or restricted access. The Spanish and Maisel synagogues have wheelchair access, while the Old-New Synagogue and Old Jewish Cemetery have more significant limitations. If mobility is a concern, mention it when booking so the route can be planned appropriately and check the museum’s current accessibility guidance.

Why take a private Jewish Quarter tour?

Josefov can be visited independently, but the sites represent very different periods: medieval religious life, early modern scholarship, the transformation of the ghetto, Jewish emancipation, the Holocaust and post-war Jewish life. A private guide can connect these periods and adjust the depth of the tour to the questions that matter most to you.
