Overview

Updated: 22 September 2026 | Reviewed by: Top Travel Prague team

Prague’s Art Nouveau is a private 3-hour tour for travellers interested in the architecture, decorative arts and cultural atmosphere of the city around 1900. Travelling with a private guide and car or minivan, you will see elegant turn-of-the-century buildings, walk along Pařížská Street and explore the Municipal House, one of Prague’s most important Art Nouveau interiors.

The tour also introduces Alfons Mucha and the wider Central European world in which Prague’s Art Nouveau developed. The route can be adapted to place more emphasis on architecture, Mucha, interiors or photography, and a Mucha museum visit or specially arranged Municipal House tour can be included when confirmed in advance.

What you will discover on the Prague Art Nouveau tour

Art Nouveau flourished in Europe from the late 19th century into the early 20th century. In Prague, the style appeared in apartment buildings, hotels, shops, public buildings and richly decorated interiors, often bringing architecture, sculpture, painting, stained glass, furniture and ornamental detail together as one complete artistic composition.

  • Vltava river embankments – see selected buildings from Prague’s rapid turn-of-the-century expansion and learn how the city changed around 1900.
  • Pařížská Street – walk through one of central Prague’s most architecturally distinctive streets and discuss the styles that shaped the rebuilt Jewish Quarter.
  • Municipal House – discover a major Prague Art Nouveau landmark with interiors combining architecture, painting, sculpture, stained glass and decorative craft.
  • Alfons Mucha – learn how the Czech artist became internationally famous in Paris and how his work became closely associated with the visual language of Art Nouveau.
  • Prague around 1900 – place the city’s Art Nouveau buildings in the wider cultural context of Central Europe, including the Vienna Secession and artists such as Gustav Klimt.

Suggested 3-hour itinerary

All Top Travel Prague tours can be customised according to your interests and practical needs. A typical Prague Art Nouveau route may include:

  1. Pick-up at your accommodation. Meet your private guide and driver at your hotel or another agreed location in Prague.
  2. Introduction during the drive. Your guide explains Prague’s development around the turn of the 20th century and the main ideas behind Art Nouveau.
  3. Vltava embankment. Drive past selected turn-of-the-century buildings and discuss how Prague expanded beyond its medieval core.
  4. Pařížská Street. Continue on foot through a part of central Prague shaped by major redevelopment at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
  5. Municipal House. Visit the building and, when arranged in advance, explore its representative interiors on a guided tour.
  6. Optional Mucha-focused stop. Add a visit to the Mucha Foundation Art Museum or another Mucha-related element when requested and practical within the itinerary.
  7. Drop-off in the city centre or at your accommodation. The finishing point can be adapted to your next plans whenever timing and traffic allow.

Municipal House: Prague’s Art Nouveau showcase

Municipal House was built between 1905 and 1911 and is one of the clearest places in Prague to see the Art Nouveau ideal of combining architecture with decorative art. The building was designed by Antonín Balšánek and Osvald Polívka, while its interiors involved leading Czech artists including Alfons Mucha, Jan Preisler and Ladislav Šaloun.

Mucha’s contribution is especially visible in the Mayor’s Hall, where he designed a complete decorative scheme. This makes Municipal House particularly valuable for visitors who want to understand Mucha not only as a poster artist but also as part of Prague’s architectural and cultural life.

The Municipal House currently offers guided tours of its representative interiors, and special tours for organised groups can be booked in advance. Access depends on the venue programme and should be confirmed before the tour. See the official Municipal House tour information for current details.

Alfons Mucha in Prague today

Alfons Mucha became internationally famous in fin-de-siècle Paris, particularly through his theatre posters for Sarah Bernhardt and his distinctive decorative compositions. His work helped define the visual language now associated with Art Nouveau, but his career later expanded far beyond commercial poster design.

The older version of this tour referred to visiting „Mucha’s House“. Mucha’s former Prague residences are not standard public visitor attractions today, so this should not be treated as a guaranteed stop. A practical current alternative is the Mucha Foundation Art Museum at Savarin Palace on Na Příkopě, which presents works from the Mucha family collection.

If Mucha is a priority for you, ask to include the museum when you send your request. Current visitor information is available from the official Mucha Foundation Art Museum.

Why choose a specialist Art Nouveau tour?

Prague is often introduced through its medieval and Baroque monuments, so the architecture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries can be easy to overlook. A specialist tour makes it easier to notice the facade details, materials, decorative motifs and urban changes that belong to this later period.

The combination of a private vehicle and walking also allows you to connect buildings in different parts of the centre without spending most of the three hours moving between them. There is still walking on historic pavements and cobbled streets, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

If you want a broader introduction to the city before focusing on a specialist theme, consider our Welcome to Prague private tour. You can also browse our full collection of private Prague tours.

Practical information

The current Prague’s Art Nouveau product includes a car or minivan, with vehicle type depending on the number of guests, and a private guide for the full excursion. The standard duration is 3 hours and the published starting rate is 90 EUR per hour.

Entrance tickets to the Municipal House, the Mucha Foundation Art Museum or other paid interiors are not listed as standard inclusions on the current tour page. If you would like to include an interior visit or a private Municipal House tour, mention it when booking so availability, timing and any additional admission costs can be confirmed.

The exact order of stops may change with traffic, opening hours, event schedules and your accommodation location. This is a private tour, so the route can be adjusted to focus more closely on architecture, Mucha, interiors or other interests.
