Overview

Updated: 22 September 2026 | Reviewed by: Top Travel Prague team

Discover one of the Czech Republic’s best-known craft traditions on a private Bohemian Crystal Tour from Prague. This 5-hour excursion takes you to the Rückl glassworks in Nižbor, where Czech crystal is still shaped and cut by hand, while your private guide introduces the wider story of Bohemian glass and leading Czech names such as Moser, Preciosa and Lasvit.

The focus of the standard tour is the working glassworks at Nižbor rather than a rushed circuit of factories across the country. You can see how crystal is formed, cooled, cut and finished, learn how Czech glassmaking developed over centuries, and understand how traditional craftsmanship continues alongside contemporary design.

Experience Czech crystal at a working glassworks

Bohemian glass has been produced in the Czech lands for centuries, with especially strong glassmaking traditions in regions of Bohemia where forests, water and suitable raw materials supported the growth of workshops and factories. Over time, Czech glassmakers became known for skilled cutting, engraving, decorative techniques and the ability to combine traditional craft with new design.

The centrepiece of this tour is Rückl Glassworks in Nižbor, around 30 to 40 minutes from Prague depending on traffic. The Nižbor factory was founded in 1903 by Antonín Rückl, while the Rückl family’s glassmaking history reaches back much further.

During a factory visit you can see the production process at close range, from the hot glass shaped by glassblowers to the cutting and finishing stages. Rückl’s current collections are made from lead-free crystal, so the older description of the factory as producing 24% lead crystal is no longer appropriate for the present-day product range.

Suggested 5-hour itinerary

All Top Travel Prague tours can be customised according to your interests and practical needs. A typical Bohemian Crystal Tour may include:

  1. Pick-up at your accommodation. Meet your private guide at your hotel or another agreed location in Prague.
  2. Private transfer to Nižbor. Travel from Prague to the Rückl glassworks while your guide introduces the history of Czech and Bohemian glassmaking.
  3. Rückl glassworks visit. Discover the working factory and learn about glassblowing, moulding, cooling, cutting and finishing techniques.
  4. Czech crystal brands in context. Learn how Rückl differs from other major Czech names such as Moser, Preciosa and Lasvit, and how each represents a different part of the country’s glass tradition.
  5. Factory store or additional time in Nižbor. Depending on the confirmed programme and opening hours, there may be time to browse current crystal collections.
  6. Return to Prague. Private transfer back to your accommodation or another agreed drop-off point.

Rückl: hand-blown and hand-cut Czech crystal

The Rückl family’s documented glassmaking history begins in the 19th century, and the Nižbor glassworks itself was established in 1903. Today the factory combines long-established manual techniques with contemporary Czech design. Its production process still depends heavily on skilled glassmakers, cutters and craftspeople working by hand.

A visit is particularly useful because it shows that crystal production is not a single step. A piece begins with a design and mould, moves through the hot shop where molten glass is blown and shaped, then cools slowly before cutting, grinding and finishing. This makes the excursion more than a shopping stop: it is an introduction to the craft behind the finished object.

Rückl currently promotes guided factory visits and hands-on glassmaking experiences, with schedules that can change. Your exact factory programme should therefore be confirmed for the date of your tour. See Rückl’s official glassworks information for current visitor details.

Moser, Preciosa and Lasvit: three different sides of Czech glass

The older version of this page could be read as if the standard 5-hour tour physically visited Rückl, Moser, Preciosa and Lasvit. These companies are located in different parts of the Czech Republic, so visiting all of their production sites is not realistic within a 5-hour excursion from Prague. In the standard programme, they are better presented as part of the wider story of Czech glass.

  • Moser was founded by Ludwig Moser in Karlovy Vary in 1857, when he opened an engraving workshop and glass shop. The company is known today for handmade, lead-free crystal and detailed engraving. A separate Moser factory visit is possible in Karlovy Vary and can be incorporated into a longer customised day trip.
  • Preciosa was established in 1948 and builds on the much older glassmaking traditions of North Bohemia’s Crystal Valley. Today the group produces crystal components, jewellery, lighting and other glass products through several specialised companies.
  • Lasvit was founded in 2007 and represents the contemporary design side of Czech glass, creating lighting, sculptures, art installations and architectural glass while drawing on the glassmaking traditions of Northern Bohemia.

Why Bohemian glass became internationally recognised

Glassmaking developed strongly in Bohemia over several centuries, particularly in northern regions where specialised workshops and later factories formed a dense network of glass producers, cutters, engravers and jewellery makers. Czech makers became known not only for transparent crystal but also for coloured glass, cut decoration, engraving, beads, chandeliers and later large-scale lighting and art installations.

That history is still visible today. Rückl represents hand-cut crystal, Moser is associated with luxury handmade glass and engraving, Preciosa operates across crystal components, jewellery and lighting, while Lasvit connects Czech glassmaking skills with international contemporary design. Together they show why the term Bohemian glass covers much more than one material or one decorative style.

Practical information

The current Top Travel Prague product lists a duration of 5 hours and a starting rate of 70 EUR per hour. It also lists a private guide for the full excursion. The itinerary describes private transfers from Prague to Nižbor and back, but the current „Included“ section does not separately list transport or factory admission, so these details should be confirmed in your quotation before booking.

Factory visits depend on production schedules, public opening times and advance availability. Some workshops may operate differently on weekends or during factory holidays. Closed footwear is recommended for industrial visits, and any mobility requirements should be mentioned in advance so the most suitable programme can be confirmed.

If you want to visit Moser in Karlovy Vary rather than focus on Rückl in Nižbor, consider our Karlovy Vary private day tour, which currently includes a Moser Glass Factory visit. You can also browse our full collection of private day trips from Prague.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Bohemian Crystal Tour?

The standard Top Travel Prague Bohemian Crystal Tour lasts 5 hours and is listed from 70 EUR per hour.

Which glassworks do we visit?

The standard itinerary centres on the Rückl glassworks in Nižbor. Moser, Preciosa and Lasvit are introduced as important Czech glass brands rather than guaranteed factory visits within the same 5-hour programme.

How far is Rückl Glassworks from Prague?

Rückl Glassworks is in Nižbor, roughly 30 to 40 minutes from Prague by car in normal conditions, although travel time depends on traffic and your exact pick-up point.

Is Rückl crystal still made with 24% lead?

Rückl’s current product information describes its crystal as lead-free, so the older 24% lead-crystal description should not be used for the current collection.

Can the tour include Moser in Karlovy Vary?

Yes, but Moser is in Karlovy Vary and should be planned as a longer customised day trip rather than added to the standard 5-hour Nižbor programme.

Are transport and factory admission included?

The current itinerary describes private transfers to and from Nižbor, while the published „Included“ section specifically lists the private guide. Confirm transport, factory admission and any additional visit costs when requesting your final quotation.
