Prague tours
Prague Castle is much more than a single palace. Spread across the hill above Malá Strana in Hradčany, the complex brings together royal residences, churches, courtyards, fortifications and gardens that reflect more than a thousand years of Czech history. On this private Prague Castle tour, your guide places the architecture and monuments in context while adapting the pace and route to your interests.
The tour typically covers the principal visitor sites within the castle complex, including St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George’s Basilica and Golden Lane, subject to current visitor access. A popular seasonal version can also include the Royal Garden. Because Prague Castle remains a working presidential complex and St Vitus Cathedral is an active place of worship, access to individual interiors can change for official, operational or liturgical reasons.

Prague Castle, or Pražský hrad, was most likely founded around 880 by Prince Bořivoj of the Přemyslid dynasty. The castle complex covers almost 70,000 square metres and developed over many centuries rather than being built as a single project. Romanesque remains, Gothic architecture, Renaissance additions, Baroque alterations and 20th-century interventions can all be found within the same complex.
The castle served as the seat of Bohemian princes and kings, later played an important role under rulers who also held the title of Holy Roman Emperor, and became the seat of the head of state again after the founding of Czechoslovakia in 1918. Today it remains the seat of the President of the Czech Republic. Architect Jože Plečnik carried out important alterations after 1920 as the complex was adapted for the new republic.
Prague Castle is not a separate UNESCO property. It forms part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Prague, which was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1992. The castle is one of the historic centre’s defining monuments.
Prague Castle sits on elevated ground above Malá Strana, so the approach matters. The official Prague Castle visitor information lists tram stop Pražský hrad as one of the easiest approaches, while routes from Malostranská or Malostranské náměstí involve a steeper climb or stairs. Your guide can choose the most suitable approach for your accommodation, mobility and plans.
Wear comfortable shoes. Courtyards and surrounding streets include cobblestones, and some historic interiors involve steps or uneven surfaces. Visitors with limited mobility should mention this when booking so the route can be planned with those limitations in mind.
Opening hours and access vary by season, and temporary closures are common because the castle is still used for state functions. Cathedral access can also change for religious services. Before your visit, check the official Prague Castle current closures and opening hours. Your private route can be adjusted when a particular building is unavailable.
If you would like a broader introduction to the city, see our private Prague tours. For visitors who want a more specialised castle experience, Top Travel Prague also offers a Prague Castle tour with private viewing of St Wenceslas Chapel and the Royal Crypt.
